You need to think like a pro; which graphics card and CPU is better and what should be the upgradability of the PC?

Prior to investing into a new gaming system, browse through my list of best gaming desktops 2019 to learn more about the trends and offerings in gaming desktops.

Want Real Gaming Computer? Factors You Should Know  300

When you want to buy a high-end gaming computer, there are certain factors that you need to check out. Almost every new model in gaming desktops, within the same price category, can hit certain benchmarks. But, your focus should be on getting a long-term solution that is loaded with remarkable features, eccentricities and manageable quirks. It should reflect your needs as well as provide required horsepower. Presented below is an analysis of the  main factors you need to give preference to while buying gaming desktop.

The games You want to play:

Gaming Could Be Fun- With the Best Games in Town:

Think about your taste in games, what actually do you want to achieve on your new gaming desktop?

Such as, lover of new-age first-person shooter games should ideally look for better graphics hardware than CPU performance. Similarly, turn-based war games require a faster CPU as it would need to process AI quickly. But, real-time strategy games need a fair balance between CPU and graphic hardware.

Nowadays, genres have been blurred to a great extent as multiplayer first-person shooters usually boast of strong strategic element specifically in commander mode. First-person element is added in some of the new real-time strategy games especially tower-defense games. So, good GPU is also important. For instance, you will find Civilization V appear better in DirectX11 mode than DirectX9.

The GPU:

Good Graphics = Good Gaming

After understanding the type of games you want to play, it’s time to think about the GPU. Needless to say that graphics are a vital aspect of gaming even in CPU-oriented games. So, ideally you should prefer to buy best possible graphics card in your budget but don’t spend a lot just for the GPU because you can run most of the games at default settings.

People prefer high-end graphics card for various reasons, such as, for antialiasing in maximum possible titles or stereoscopic 3D. But, you must be able to adjust your game settings appropriately too, else it would be a waste of money. I suggest that at least one-third of the total cost of the machine should be for the graphics. Like, if you are spending $1000, then spending $330 on graphics card is enough.

The Budget:

Nobody has unlimited budget so better settle on a reasonable price range for your new gaming desktop. You can use your gaming desktop for other PC oriented functions as well and not just for gaming. After all, you won’t be buying a $500 GPU only to run Quicken.  Also, the components you can afford will be determined by your budget. You may love to run two graphics cards in CrossFire or SLI more but if your budget is $900 then you cannot get dual graphics cards.

The Well-liked Brand

Sometimes a brand name is all that you need to feel confident about your choice of gaming desktop. But I suggest that you check out the list of components of the machine instead of blindly going for the brand. You may find similar package in a much cheaper brand too. However, brands have their own appeal. So you can browse through the offerings of most well-liked brands and make an informed decision.

Part #12: Zoom In: Build Your Gaming PC

Best gaming desktop isn’t one that you buy but the one that you build. Selecting your preferred components is an excellent way to get a powerful performer PC. Here is an all-you-need-to-know guide on building the best high-end and mid-end gaming desktop. I promise that you will be able to create a PC that will be future-proof and you will be able to play games at higher settings for two to three years for sure.

A monster high-end gaming PC Building

In this category, your budget should be at least $2,ooo, which is quite justified. You should be aiming to get an overclockable processor and powerful graphics card while the monitor should be able to accommodate the high-end settings.

  • Ultrawide 1440p 144Hz displays are recommended to get best value from your gaming desktop.
  • Highest clockspeeds are offered by Intel Core i7-8700K and with 6 cores, you get amazing boost to the processing power.
  • A high-end PC requires great motherboard too, and I believe the Asus Strix Z370-E will be an excellent choice as it has everything you need and overclocks just as well as any Z370 board.
  • For RAM, you might be confused between quantity and clock-speed for sure. I think that going beyond 16GB is a bit impractical and won’t benefit you much. So, it is better to get top-tier memory such as G.Skill’s Flare X DDR4-3200.
  • Nividia GTX 1080 is the perfect graphics for high-end gaming desktop. It is a top-end performer at both 1080p and 1440p 144Hz G-Sync display while games glide naturally.
  • For power supplies, EVGA’s P2 series are my personal favorites because the already excellent G2 line has been enhanced even more. It sport 80 Plus Platinum efficiency and has a fully modular design. This means there will be minimal cable clutter.
  • Maximum load of 850W is enough for this monster as there will be plentiful room for an additional GPU in case you need it.

A monster Mid-end gaming PC Building;

For mid-end gaming desktop, I suggest you keep the budget at $750 and eliminate extra components from your list such as a huge HDD or an optical drive while go for cheaper casing. Put maximum of your budget in graphics card and the CPU, which I suggest to be at the low end of Coffee Lake but should be a Z370 motherboard and a full-fledge Core i7-8700 K. Performance wise, this build will easily run games at 1080p in maximum settings but you can opt for 1440p and run games at medium to high settings. However, 4k is a farfetched option.

Here’s the breakdown of the components you can buy at $750:

  • New Intel Core i3-8100 is similar to the Core i5-7400 but with improved clockspeed
  • GTX 1060 6GB graphics card may appear costly to you but it is great in performance and uses much less power with an average of 60fps at 1080p max
  • MSI Z370-A Pro motherboard is perfect for mid-end PC build as it allows a CPU upgrade to high or mid-end processor such as the i7-8700K
  • I am not suggesting any particular DDR4 memory brand but would recommend 8GB DDR4-2400 (2x4GB) kit such as DDR4-2666 or DDR4-3000
  • Crucial MX300 275GB SSD although isn’t fastest one in this category but capacity and price wise it fits your criteria perfectly. At $80 it provides enough space to serve as an independent primary drive
  • EVGA 450W 80+ Bronze PSU for power supply is recommended. It is semi-modular and comes with 3 year warranty too. Go for detachable cables I would say.
  • Fractal Design Focus G case is excellent and pretty easy to be fitted

Part#13 Guide & Tips Times: How to Choose A Gaming Desktop

Although it seems an easy task but it really isn’t. You cannot just go to the shop and buy a gaming desktop, without any comparisons or brainstorming. After all you are spending hundreds of dollars for the machine, so it better be good enough to suit your requirements. This is why I am providing you all the necessary tips and tricks to identify the perfect gaming desktop from the lot.

Quick Tips

Too busy to browse through the entire guide?

Here are some quick tips to save your time:

  • An AMD 500 series or Nvidia 10 series GPU is better if you can afford because you will be able to play all high-end games in frames as smooth as silk
  • $1,000 is an average range but to be wise, you should start at $699 as in this range you will easily get mid-end specs
  • The system should be VR ready to prevent future expenditures on the technology in case you decide to use HTC Vive or Oculus Rift
  • You must select an upgrade-friendly design that could be opened without using too many tools
  • Try to upgrade the PC with a new SSD or GPU as it will keep your gaming desktop updated enough to accommodate new games without extra expenditures
  • If you decide to buy a smaller form factor then keep in mind that you will need to buy another unit after 2-3 years
  • Opt for USB Type-C and Thunderbolt ports to get bandwidth that connects two 4k monitors simultaneously

Manufacturers like Origin PC and Maingear always try to trick users by offering attractive features like custom paint jobs, liquid cooling and colored cables. Remember that such refined features definitely raise the cost of the desktop. Can you spend $250 for a custom paint job of Origin PC Millennium and an additional $69 for the interior and $353 for liquid-cooling? Of course you won’t because the total already reaches $672 and you haven’t even considered other specs yet. Usually it is much cheaper to get a decent-looking preconfigured chasis such as the Asus ROG G20CB or Alienware Area 51.

Does PC Size Really Matter?

Desktop sizes vary greatly from full tower, mini tower to mid tower, small form factors and desktop. The size occupies space accordingly such as the Maingear Rush Super Stock full tower is 24” tall and stands vertically on the floor while Alienware Alpha can be stowed away in any corner. An average mid tower is 18” in height while the mini tower averages around 12” height. So what is the ideal size for a gaming desktop? Well, it really depends upon the space available in your room and the kind of specs you require to fill in the case. In a full tower PC you can accommodate as much as you want to such as an extended ATX motherboard, funky RAID configurations and up to 3 GPUs with multiple fans, lighting and liquid-cooling pipes too.

There is a wide variety available in small form factor PCs and a majority of these can slide into any entertainment center like Xbox One or PS4. Desktop PCs usually don’t offer enough room for upgrading but you can easily play the most powerful PC titles without compromising on space.

Also, you must remember that large towers such as those with a vast array of goods would cost a lot. So my recommendation would be to opt for a mid or mini tower as you can get reasonably powerful specs at lesser price with enough room to play high-end gaming titles.

If you are looking for silky smooth frame rates in both conventional and VR gaming then I suggest that you should invest into AMD’s Polaris like RX 570 or 580 or opt for Nvidia Pascal GPUs like GTX 1080 or 1080Ti. Although a bit pricier but you will get the required power and might not need to upgrade your PC in the next few years. But for those on a tight budget, I would recommend Nvidia’s latest GTX 1050 or 1050Ti that are available in under $150 and are compatible with Oculus Rift.

Video RAM should be at least 8GB if you want to play titles like Battlefield 1 or The Witcher 3, which tend to be CPU-intensive games.

In processors, I recommend the $85 Intel Pentium G4560 or the $130 AMD Ryxen3 1300X. This would give you a decent enough mid-range system. If you can spend more, then go for Intel’s latest 8th gen Core i7 processors at $350.

What Do You Need for VR?

Let’s suppose you are eager to play games in virtual reality and intend to use VR headsets for this purpose then you need to get a desktop than can facilitate this desire without any extra expenditure later on. Do your homework beforehand and choose a system that can guarantee full compatibility with VR headsets. For instance, minimum spec requirements of Oculus Rift include Intel Core i3-6100 or AMD FX 3450 CPU plus 8GB RAM. You will need Nvidia GeForce GTX 960 GPU or AMD Radeon RX 470 GPU and no less than Windows 8 OS. In this regard, my suggestion would be to go for the $749 Gamer Ultra from CyberPower as it is Oculus Rift ready. Fans of the VIVE need to spend a bit more on the specs as at the minimum you will need to have an Intel Cire i5 45900 or AMD FX 8350 system or ever higher one with Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 GPU, 4GB RAM and Windows 7.

This is an important aspect to consider while buying a gaming desktop. As is the industry norm, there are always newer, better options available in motherboards, RAM, GPUs and storage, etc., so you might want to upgrade your PC at some point. When the need arises, I believe that instead of buying a whole new system that costs much more, it is a better idea to spend on a new Nvidia card or an AMD. When buying the PC, you must ensure that you are able to access the interior easily, which should include accessing the motherboard, drive bays, RAM, GPUs and fans. Dell XPS Tower and Alienware Aurora both are good options as these are upgrade-ready PCs and can be opened easily. All you need to do is swipe the part out without needing any tools and spending a lot of time on opening the case.

The more the better should be the strategy when buying a gaming desktop. On a desktop PC, you should have more ports to allow maximum connectivity with multiple monitors, VR headsets and peripherals. I believe that a minimum of 6 USB 3.0 ports, one HDMI port and three DisplayPorts should be there. You can also get a system with USB Type-C and Thunderbolt ports to benefit from fast transfer speeds and connecting a 4k to 5k monitor easily.

It is pretty hard to determine a reasonable enough price range to buy a gaming desktop as everyone’s preference us different. But, as per my experience, $699 is a decent starting point. In this price range you can expect to get a solid tower that can accommodate entry to mid-level specs and has enough room for expansion. If you can hit the $1000 range, you can aim for a solid tower with mid-high-level specs such as Core i5 to Core i7 CPUs plus 8GB RAM and SSDs. You can even choose between GTX 1070 or 1080 GPU. At $1500, sky is the limit as you can choose from high-end and most expensive specs such as blazing fast processing, multiple GPUs, HDDs and SDDs.

Brief Summary

In this section I introduced you to the top features that you must consider while buying a new gaming desktop. You should do your homework before selecting a PC by making a list of your preferences in desktop appearance, display, case, upgradability, budget, processing power and ports. Size does matter in this context as a bugger unit would consume a lot of space and might cost a lot too while a mid to small one can let you play your favorite games without burdening your pocket. Performance is the key here so you must give maximum consideration to this aspect instead of display and exterior.

If I Were You, I will Choose Asus ROG GR8 II, Here Are 3 Reasons

  • It is simply the best gaming platform currently in the market considering that all that amazing power is packed into a compact body. It can easily surpass many high-end prebuilt rigs in terms of portability and flexibility of use
  • It is a mid-range model but built after considering all the requirements of high-end gaming. Not only is its processor is blazing fast but the Nvidia GTX graphics also helps in providing seamless, stunning display
  • It offers amazing connectivity with all mandatory and optional ports making an appearance including USB 3.0, USB 2.0, USB 3.1 Type-C, DisplayPort, HDMI and even Gigabit Ethernet
